Fading. Probably the most common type damage we deal with, fading occurs in a variety of ways. Overused rugs with high foot traffic fade over time. Water damage and spills can cause fading, although more often than not, they create deeper yellowed areas. Sunlight, direct or bright indirect, is the greatest cause of discoloration and fading in area rugs and is the hardest to prevent. Rotating the rug frequently can help encourage more even fade but will not prevent it. If you truly want to preserve your rug, a suggestion would be to have someone install a UV protective coating on your windows to help reduce the rays coming into your home. Luckily, this can have health benefits as well, reducing the harmful light rays that beam in while still allowing you to enjoy sunlight in your home.
Incidental damages. Incidental damages are hard to prevent, and the types are endless. From spilling food and drink to dropping nail polish remover or other cleaners that can discolor a rug, these accidents cause great damage and can ruin a rugs coloration.
Torn and worn areas. A large quantity of foot traffic can cause rugs to lose their luster and lighten in more threadbare areas. The lighter appearance can make the sections appear worse than they are and, when recolored, often blend naturally with the rest of the area rug.

Rug Color Correction

We never recommend cutting your rug, but if there is a stray fiber to remove, a unique way to test the material is by lightly burning the detached piece of fabric. Do this over a safe, fire proof surface. If the fiber is nylon it will burn quickly and appear to bead up as it does so. If it is wool, it will not light easily and will burn slowly, smelling slightly like burning hair. Polyester burns quickly like nylon, but the polyester fiber will also shrink slightly while burning. Acrylic goes up in flames immediately and will have a rotten smell as it burns. If you can diagnose your rug, that will help us when we speak to you over the phone for the initial diagnosis. If not, we always inspect the rug in-person and make our diagnosis before proceeding.
