OUR RUG CLEANING PROCESS

For those luxurious silk rugs and beautiful antique masterpieces in your home, you need a company and a process you can trust. After we have established the pricing and picked up the rug, we are ready to begin cleaning. Here is how we treat your rugs when you bring them to Winnetka Oriental Rug Pros:

Assessment and Planning. The first thing we do when your rug arrives is re-assess it. You may have called us for a light cleaning, or maybe you called us for a stain or spill, but different things show in different lighting, and the more eyes we have on the rug the more we will notice. During the assessment phase, we look over every part of the rug to be sure no spot is missed. Even if you have already provided us with the rug history, we will also re-assess the approximate age of the rug, which can change the appropriate cleaning measures. The older the rug is, the more delicate it will be. We leave no stone unturned and will look at the rug until we understand the ins and outs of it to give it the best care. Level of foot traffic, the fabrics used in the rug, the knot types and quantity, and the type of dye process used will be analyzed as well. By the time we complete this, we will know how to eliminate any potential issue during the cleaning process and will have a customized rug cleaning plan for your piece. We will alert you to any changes from our initial discussion, and if we think any restoration or recoloring is necessary, we will tell you that before we begin.
Waterless Clean. The second step is our waterless cleaning in which we use a giant “blow dryer” with high-powered air bursts on the rug, or gently shake the piece to loosen and remove as much of the dry dust and dirt as possible. This reduces the amount of dirt and grime in the water during the next step and also prevents any small dust particles from moving further down in the rug and adhering to the fibers near the base where they can become trapped.
Water Wash. Following the removal of dry particles, we are ready to begin the actual washing process on the rug. We only hand wash rugs because it is the most fiber friendly, and we can adjust pressure very easily depending on the material and age of the rug. Machines, even on a gentle setting are much more destructive, and with an expensive or antique rug, that is not a risk we are willing to take. We always wash the rug completely before focusing on specific stains or spots. When possible, this includes submerging the rug in its entirety, and gently removing grime. By submerging the rug completely, this also reduces the chance of any watermarks or rings forming on the rug. After removing any additional spots or deeper grime, we are ready to rinse the rug. Using clean water, we rinse any solution and and dirty water out of the rug for its final step in the cleaning process. This leaves it fresh and bold again.

Drying. The last step in the cleaning process is the dry cycle. With some rugs, they will be left out to dry naturally, while others will need to have a quick and gentle wring to remove excess moisture. Some extremely sensitive fabrics, like silks, will need to be dried immediately so as to reduce any water spotting or rings. In a case like this, we have air machines that help us remove any moisture quickly.

We have found that this straightforward and simple strategy is also the most effective way to take care of things. Very rarely, after the cleaning process is complete, we will see a stubborn stain reemerge lightly or notice a section that could be restored more. If this happens, we repeat any necessary steps until it is perfect again. This is also when we would perform any color retouching and restoration services, like seam repair or fabric maintenance. Finally, we contact you to schedule a time for us to return the rug to your home.
